I Remember

about

These are my vows written into a song because I have stage fright and a fear of public speaking but singing takes some of that away. I dedicate this to my life partner, and I'm sharing the things about him I love the most with everyone, in the form of past experiences.

I wrote this a few days after my fiancé’s sister's wedding when I found their vows really unique (e.g. getting the solemnizer to read out "do you -Bride’s name-, promise to let -Groom’s name- play bhangra in the car?), so I decided I wanted to write my vows into a song.

Tidbit 1: Since my fiancé is a beatboxer, I wanted him to be the beatboxer on this track as well, but I couldn’t let him know what it was about since it was meant to be a surprise. So I wrote a completely different set of lyrics and told him this was a Fiverr order and I paid him to be a sessionist on a song that was written for him 😂.

Tidbit 2: The cover art is our wedding invitation and it was designed by my fiancé’s second sister, who optimized the design into a square at my request, so she was also in on this secret.

Tidbit 3: There is also a chorus in Hindi because that’s his mother’s native language. Asking him to translate it for me would’ve been the easiest option, but he couldn’t know so I got help from a friend to translate the stanza for me.

lyrics

A long time ago, I read a piece about unique things to do on date night
One said to treat your lady like a princess, you being the chivalrous knight
But dare I say there wasn’t anything special about that concept
Because day after day you already have my feet swept

Today I stand before you
As we look each other in the eyes
You mesmerize me
So I promise you the rest of my life

I remember back at mine,
When we'd share assorted ice creams
And I’m not a fan of the almond-flavored ones
Even though you liked another
You’d pick the one you wouldn’t rather
So it wouldn’t be a bother to me

I remember all the time
When I’m going through it all
Y’know the monthly reminder that tells you you’re not pregnant
You would warm me with your body heat
Until the cramps admitted defeat
Then you’d bring me so much food to overeat

So, today I stand before you
As we look each other in the eyes
You mesmerize me
So I promise you the rest of my life
I know there will be days when truths are hard to swallow
But I’ll be there, in sickness and in sorrow

I remember back in Australia,
When we snacked on Coles cookies
And I didn’t want the ones with too many chocolate chips
You would pick each one and assess
Set aside the ones with less
And you’d eat the ones that didn’t pass the test

I remember back in school,
When our love was fresh and new
And I never liked it when all eyes were on me
You said “this song is dedicated to Amanda
BUT DON’T LOOK AT HER SHE DOESN’T LIKE ATTENTION”
That was a lot of attention
But I appreciate the mention

(So, today I stand before you)
(As we look each other in the eyes)
(You mesmerize me)
(And so I promise you the rest of my life)
(I know there will be days when truths are hard to swallow)
(But I’ll be here)
(In sickness and in sorrow)

You are the one whose flaws I’ve chosen to accept
And our love is something I want to protect
So believe me when I say
Let’s be happy and together,
Today
