Like What I See

about

I wrote this in the thick of wedding planning, when I felt forced to conform to society’s standards of what a bride should wear and look like. I am aware that I didn’t want myself to look like how a bride traditionally does, and I’m comfortable in my own skin, but it was very hard to say no to everyone else who didn’t agree with me or to just ‘let go’. There was also the expectation as a woman, to give in to my in-laws and do whatever they say or to make them happy. I don’t believe my in-laws would be happy at the expense of my happiness, so I was constantly battling with my thoughts on which opinion I should stand up for myself for, and which one I should let go.

The cover art features my bridal mehndi/henna because it's the only thing I felt I liked that coincides with society's beauty standards of a beautiful Indian bride.

lyrics

They ask if I’m excited
Looking forward to the big day
Well I’m not looking forward to
What everyone has to say
Or ask me

How are you doing your nails?
What hair do you want?
What does your dress look like?
Which jewelry are you going to flaunt?
What makeup look are you going for?
Which pretty set of heels do you adore?

I don’t want all these things on me
It has nothing to do with you or how I was raised
I want to look at myself in the mirror
And like what I see
About me

What exactly are you telling me?
Am I only enough with makeup or hair?
Is it really my ‘special’ day if all you want me to do is conform?
It would be really special if you accepted me for who I am

We are the problem
Yes, we are the problem
We are the problem
Yes, we are the problem

I don’t want all these things on me
It has nothing to do with you or how I was raised
I want to look at myself in the mirror
And like what I see
About me

I don’t want all these things on me
It has nothing to do with you or how I was raised
I want to look at myself in the mirror
And like what I see
About me

Like what I see, about me
Like what I see, about me
Like what I see, about me
